the gory details

Okay, so you want the dirt? Here's a look at some more intimate details about me.

I'm called Nishu by those who love me and Khaps by my friends from IIT, though I've picked up a few other (mostly unprintable) sobriquets along the way.

Every inch a a crab, you fool! cancerian, I am as much at home enjoying a quite moment of solitude (usually curled up solitude with a book) as I am partying and having fun. Forever ready to try things, I belive in the dictum of change being the only constant. Keep trying my hands at most things under the sun, but I've seldom had the patience to stick around long enough to be much good at anything. My enduring interests, though, have been

  • cartooning : have long been in love with all forms of sketching, and in particular the delightful art of cartooning. (as my teachers at school often found out, usually to my detriment!) The caricature on the home page is not a self-portrait, though. That was drawn by Shelly Lane, a professional caricaturist based in New York. Here's a much humbler attempt at a self-caricature. I have a few awards too to show for my efforts at the IIT. These days I gravitate towards computer distortion of images ...

I idolize R. K. Laxman among the Indian cartoonists. To view his daily strip and also some other strips and editorial cartoons I frequent, try the links on my links page.

  • photography : I'm a recent convert to serious photography, but I'm in now for the love of it. I caught the bug when I purchased my first SLR, a Pentax PZ-70. I currently have a Nikon N80, with a 28-80 Nikkor zoom and a Vivitar 70-200. View some of my better attempts in the photo gallery, or check out some photography related links on my links page.

  • music : all types, but in particular vintage Hindi film music from the 50s onwards. That's the period when melody ruled! Am a diehard Lata Mangeshkar fan. Also like ghazals, and Jagjit Singh is an obvious favourite. But I feel Chitra Singh is the more talented of the two and has been unlucky not to be given the same recognition. Any thoughts on the matter? Why not say so?

Also love Antakshari, the quintessentially Indian game of musical quiz. Have twice represented the IIT in inter-college Antakshari contests in India.

  • I also like to play around with the computer, whether surfing the internet or learning new things. Web development is a hobby and, other than my home page, I have created two web sites, for the Field Analytical Chemistry Laboratory at NJIT and for Vertech International Inc.

My father, Dr. Vijay Chandra Kishore, is a Professor and the Head of the Department of Anatomy at the Nalanda Medical College, Patna, and a practising pathologist. He has a great sense of humor and a very positive and cheerful disposition, forever ready to help. But, man, the one thing he does prize is his siestas!

My mother, Dr. Prabha Kishore, is the greatest mom on earth and a Lecturer of Home Science at the Ganga Devi Mahila College, Patna. Hey, how does one begin summing up a mother? Like her sisters, she has a soft corner for "family" Hindi movies. My brother's marriage gives her the daughter she's always longed for.

Dr. Amit (Sonu), my elder brother, is a doctor presently doing his housemanship at the Patna Medical College, Patna. Loves contemporary hindi film music and watching movies, and these days, my bhabhi. Has a way of effortlessly mastering anything he tries his hands at. Admirably cool under pressure, he's always been a model in this regard.

My younger brother, Vinit (Babboo) is in his Intermediate year of Chartered Accountancy course and under articleship for the firm of J. P. Sanghvi and Co. in Bombay. A gifted sportsman, about his only grouse has been that he's not taller than his ... umm, less than 5 1/2'. More than makes up with his tremendous enthusiasm and determination. Expert at bonsai. A whiz at making friends among all ages.

The newest addition to our family is my sister-in-law, Neetu Kishore née Chandra. She and bhaiya were wed on the 16th of January this year. That's the two of them on their honeymoon in Goa. MA (Modern History) examinee, she shares bhaiya's love for movies, and likes clay painting & beanbag toys. Regrettably, I have enjoyed her company only for two days & can hardly add more here.

Us and our three cousins, Rajnish (Guddu), Awanish (Luddu) and Manish Sinha (Rajju) , have always considered ourselves six brothers. Rajnish, right, is a Department Manager at Usha Martin, Jamshedpur, and the proud father of the irrepresible Tanu; Manish, center, is a Senior Engg. Officer with Bharat Petroleum at Bombay; and Awanish, left, is a lawyer in Delhi and father of the cutest kid, Nitesh. Here's a photograph of the six of us, this one taken at my brother's marriage, and another one together with their better halves.

We have been a foursome since early on in school, and our friendship endures despite each having gone their separate ways. Mayank Sinha, top, the livewire of the group, is employed with TCS in Bombay, and recently got engaged to the girl of his dreams. Saifuddin Ahmad, right, the guy who believed in doing rather than talking, is a final year architecture student at the Bihar College of Engineering. He's also a great photographer and a ham. Vikash Sinha, bottom, the sophisticate / wacky, is studying management at XLRI after deciding the IAS didn't deserve him. BTW, if you're a St. Michael's alumnus class of 1990(10th) or 1992(+2), please check the St. Michael's page.

My closest pal at Science College, Kush Kochgaway works for Infosys Technologies at Chennai. We never could agree on our choice of movies, but we otherwise shared a lot in common, including the same default frowning expression, and some great days during ISc. He remains a close confidante and a sandbag for my ideas.

By usual standards, my "innermost" circle of friends at the IIT was quite big - so big that there's hardly any photograph of us which fits us all! We called ourselves "Rachna", after the names of the two cities which most of us called our hometown, and which would probably mean nothing to anyone else anyway. I could try describing each of us, but one, I'd fall short of adjectives and two, Anshuman does such a better job of it. Some photographs of us, during the KGP days and now, can be seen here. Apne matlab ka kuchh links are provided on the rachna page.
